How to select a perfume or deodorant

Whenever I used to shop a perfume or deodorant, it confused me a number of times how I can find a good fragrance. Picking a good fragrance was never an easy task till I explored some simple things to keep in mind before selecting a good fragrance:

How to select a perfume

1. Fragrance type:
Choose the fragrance you like most or a combination of your favorite fragrances. It can be Floral, Woody, oriental, Musk, Citric etc or a combination of these. Check the notes in fragrance especially the base note. Generally, fragrances up to 3 notes can be found in shopping stores and are more common. Fragrances having more notes can be difficult to find.

2. Occasional Fragrances :
Choose fragrance according to the occasion. For brides, fragrance should be as unique as their wedding dress. Select it depending on your role in the occasion. Go for signature scent or fragrance that's closer to it for better experience and appreciation. If people compliment or praise you on using particular fragrance, that's certainly your signature scent. Don't be a follower of fragrances. What works for others may not work for you. Let people take sense of your  whiff!

3. Fragrance strength and lasting power:
The fragrance should last at least 4 hours. If the fragrance fades easily, you will have to take the pain of spraying it frequently. In general, Parafum provides 6-8 hours of fragrance, EDP provides 4 to 6 hours and EDT lasts for 2 to 4 hours. For 10 or more hours of lasting fragrances, go for concentrated fragrances. Also the consistency of fragrance decreases with time after application. Do not forget to check the date of manufacture on deodorants. If you are buying a deodorant or perfume after a longer period from the date of manufacture, there are chances that the fragrance will have lesser strength and lasting power.

4. Check alcoholic or non alcoholic:
Check the type of fragrance you want to use. Generally, non-alcoholic fragrances provide a more natural aroma than alcoholic ones. Alcoholic fragrances provide stronger notes and can be easily detected by people around you. Make sure to check the type of alcohol used. The better the quality of alcohol, better will be its function as a disinfectant and antiperspirant. Also note the purity of oils in fragrances. In general, Para-fum contains 20-40% of pure oil and is expensive among all fragrances. EDP contains 10-20% essential oils, EDT contains 5 -10% pure oils and EDC contains only 2-5% pure oil. There have already been lots of doubts and discussions on use of alcohol as a skin care product. A simple advice is if you get rashes or irritation on using alcoholic perfume or deodorant, go for non alcoholic ones.

5. Nature of fragrance, Masculine or feminine:
The notes  can be masculine or feminine. Sporty people prefer masculine fragrances whereas people with lesser activity prefer feminine fragrances. Some fragrances are difficult to decide between masculine or feminine and can be used in every day life as the fragrance is a mix of the two.

6. Price:
Price can be an important factor to decide. Whenever there's a conflict on buying a fragrance, check for other better options are available under the same price. If you find one go for it, otherwise stick to the current option. Check the ratings and reviews on internet if you doubt your selection.

7. Volume or size:
Volume or size of the deodorant or spray tells how long you will be able to use the deodorant. Choose lesser volume and size for a travel friendly product. Buy a bigger size if you love to use a particular fragrance for longer period.

8. Liquid or gas:
Check whether the deodorant contains gas or liquid. Don't just buy a cylinder of pressurized gas. Liquid sprays perform better than than gassy fragrances and last longer.

9. Fragrance Ingredients:
Check ingredients of the fragrance you use if you have sensitive skin or get frequent irritation. Click here to read the detailed report on safe and unsafe cosmetic ingredients.

10. Type of antiperspirant or deodorant:
It can be spray, stick, roll on, gel  or  cream type. This depends on personal preference. Spray deodorants and perfumes dry up easily than others. Roll-ons sometime leave an impression on contact with shirts but work well with people who sweat more.

Apply fragrance on pulse points for better experience.  and enjoy the world of fragrances with better experiences.
